Greater Still

Wedding poems are full of air.

They all expound on lives to share.

How I found you, and you found me,

How two lives joined are lives set free,

How I am full but once was void,

How you are filled with life enjoyed.

But lest I slip on Sigmund Freud…

By wedding poems I am annoyed.

They’re sugared syrup on steroid.

Imagination they’ve destroyed.

So, listening to them I avoid.

I’d rather have a hem-orrh-oid,

Than hear a wedding poem deployed.

At least that’s what I used to say.

Before my heart you stole away.

Before my night you turned to day

Before my wander turned to stay.

Before you were a part of me

Before my own heart you set free.

Still…

Others’ poems don’t speak for me.

Their love’s expression I don’t see.

Other’s words cannot profess…

The love for you that I possess.

For mine is fired by a star

From a universe afar,

A world unknown to mortal lives

Of men in love with other wives.

Yes…Love is patient; love is kind,

It’s slow to anger; but hold in mind…

That by forgiveness love’s defined.

Don’t tally wrongs, or keep score.

Record not the scars you wore.

Hurt is easy to revive,

But, love damaged won’t survive.

Like a tear washed out to sea,

I’ve become immersed in she….

Whose every heartbeat beats with mine,

As though from heaven-sent, a sign

That she was always in my heart

Waiting, longing from the start.

Yea, long before we ever met

Our common destiny was set.

Like my breath into the wind,

To you my vanquished soul I send.

Never breathing in again,

Unless it’s your breath I breathe in.

My love for you will last forever…

’til what’s always becomes never

’til the sky’s devoid of stars,

’til what cannot becomes ours.

Whatever clay doth make man’s life,

Whatever dust doth form his wife,

Whatever binds the universe,

With fates for better and for worse,

Whatever power Time can’t kill,

My love for you is greater still.
