Jean-Honore Fragonard 1777 “The Bolt”

“I want to dance,” he said.

She said, “With me to dance per chance?”

Coy, she flirted.

The boy deserted…

All caution for her glance.

“My heart is not…” she said.

He said, “…to knot with mine or not?”

She, “Boy, I would…”

He, “Girl, you could…”

But she could not be caught.

“It’s not you,” she said.

He said, “My fate to you I threw.”

“But in the throwing,

My heart was knowing…

You’d fear your dance was through.”

“I want to spread my wings…,” she said.

He said, “…carefree…no strings…”

“How did you know?”

“God did bestow…

One soul to share these things…”

“Can it be?” said she to he.

Said he to she, “It can…”

An embrace shared…

And one kiss dared,

Their dance of life began.
